This is an application of Extended Linguistic Dependency Diagrams (xLDD) for the user-driven visualization of dependency structures from corpus search results. It is integrated with a corpus query engine (CWB/CQP) that provides access to a sample of the Italian corpus PAISÀ. To see a dependency structure, first carry out a corpus search and then choose a sentence from the list of results.

The search term is a single word, or a regular expression describing a part of a word. For example, .*issimo specifies words that end in issimo. The search results are presented as a numbered list of sentences, where sentence numbers are clickable to visualize xLDDs for each sentence.

This PAISÀ xLDD application provides for detailed settings to adjust the visual encodings of the diagrams. (For a simpler example of customization, see the TiGer DECCA application.) Applying and altering encodings in various ways makes it easier to explore the data and to see patterns quickly. On the token level, all parts of speech are listed and for each one you can specify the following encodings:

For dependencies you can set the direction of arrows (pointing towards the head or the dependent) for all dependency relations at once and adjust the visual encodings for each dependency type separately (all dependencies are listed), with the following encodings supported:

In a dedicated search area you can search the diagram for words (tokens), dependencies, and parts of speech. Search hits are indicated by colored tokens and colored arcs with adjusted line width, all according to the current highlighting settings. With token level searches — words or part of speech (pos) — as well as with searches for dependencies, the connected units (arcs when searching for tokens, and tokens when searching for dependencies) are always highlighted in addition to the matches for tokens or dependencies.

Furthermore, you can explore the diagram in a variety of ways:
